Travel Security in Indonesia

Overview by

Health Precautions

Obligatory Vaccination and Other Recommendations
A certificate of vaccination against yellow fever is required for passengers coming from affected areas. There is a risk of malaria everywhere, except in Jakarta, large cities and the main tourist resorts of Java and Bali.
Indonesia is experiencing a fresh outbreak of dengue fever, which can be hemorrhagic. You must take measures against traveler's diarrhoea. Drinking water must be boiled or filtered.
Bathing in fresh water can expose you to the risk of bilharziosis (or schistosomiasis) found on the western bank of Lake Lindu (Sulawesi).

Avoid all contact with poultry and birds because of the epidemic of avian flu.

Safety Conditions

The general level of safety is satisfactory but theft in the home, car theft and attacks on the roads are possible. When taking a taxi, only use companies with a good reputation, and contact them by phone for preference. Many recent cases of credit card fraud have been reported.
Terrorist Risk
Places where foreign nationals go (shopping centers, international hotels, bars, restaurants, discotheques) make favorable targets for terrorists. New terrorist attacks are possible.
Risk of Natural Disaster
The whole of the archipelago is subject to widespread seismic and volcanic activity.
Traveling Women Conditions
Women are not more exposed here than anywhere else as far as safety is concerned. Nevertheless, a woman travelling alone will arouse people's curiosity.
