On July 19 2010, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, issued an official Gazette notification under the Prevention of Food Adulteration Act (PFA), proposing to amend the definition and quality standards for milk and milk products.

General Information: Introduction: This report summarizes the amendment to the Prevention of Food Adulteration Rules framed under the Prevention of Food Adulteration Act (PFA), 1954, which proposes amendments to the definitions and quality standards for milk products and also sets the level of food additives and microbiological parameters for milk products. The draft rules are expected to be taken into consideration for implementation after the expiry of comment period (60 days). The amendment proposed the definition and quality standards for milk and milk products. The proposed notification sets maximum levels of additives and sets microbiological parameters for dairy based products. The notification dated July 19, 2010 will supercede the notification dated March 25, 2008.
