THIS REPORT CONTAINS ASSESSMENTS OF COMMODITY AND TRADE ISSUES MADE BY USDA STAFF AND NOT NECESSARILY STATEMENTS OF OFFICIAL U.S. GOVERNMENT POLICY Required Report - public distribution Date: 7/26/2012 GAIN Report Number: AG1203 Algeria Grain and Feed Update Wheat update Approved By: Kurt Seifarth Prepared By: Nabila Hales Report Highlights: Algeria wheat imports decreased in the first six months of 2012. Algeria will not import durum and barley for the rest of CY2012 because of good harvest forecasts for this same year, according to the Grains buying agency (OAIC) statements. Post: Algiers Author Defined: General Information Trade News reports that the Customs National Center for Information and statistics latest figures for the first six months of 2012 show Algeria wheat imports falling by 33 percent comparing to the same period in 2011. Wheat imports represented $1.01 billion in the first six months of 2012 while for the same period in 2011, they reached $1.51 billon. It is expected that this downward trend will continue as the National Office of Grains (OAIC) stated in June 2012 that Algeria currently has the necessary supplies (of durum and barley) to cover the country’s needs until the end of 2012 and as a result, Algeria or at least the OAIC, the government’s cereals buying agency, would not need to go to the world market for these two commodities before the end 2012. However, it will continue to import bread wheat. To recall, Algeria is one of the world’s largest importers of wheat. Cereal products accounted for about 37 percent of total food imports bill in CY2011. U.S. origin wheat imports have declined dramatically long with the other commodities on tight supplies and price. U.S. origin product faces stiff competition from European suppliers on price and shipping flexibility.
