Chemicals form 12.1% of Austrian output. Plastics is the largest sector. Innovation and new
processes are sought. Companies have good links into CEE countries.
The growth of production in 2011 exceeded 10.5%. Some 270 companies operate in the sector
and employ 43,200 staff.
The majority of large firms are foreign owned such as Borealis, Henkel, Asota, Supor Group etc.
The majority of small and medium sized firms are Austrian owned and operated and often have
subsidiary plants in neighbouring CEE states.
The plastics sector dominates, accounting for 42% of all production, followed by pharma
chemicals, manmade fibres, agro chemicals and cleaning chemicals and cosmetics.
Various research institutes exist primarily in the plastics field, such as: Leoben Plastics Cluster,
the Polymer Competence Centre and the Experimental Laboratory for Plastics (TGM).
Key areas of interest and research are in the areas of nanotechnology, polymer retarding,
reinforced composites, coating technologies for metal and macro molecular substances
