Oil and Gas A Top Export Prospect for Canada May 2012 Overview Canada is the world's fourth largest producer of natural gas and the sixth largest producer of crude oil. Alberta’s oil sands are the world’s second largest oil reserve. Canada imported approximately $6.2 billion of oil and gas products from the U.S. in 2011. More than half of Canada’s oil and gas machinery comes from the U.S. Sub-Sector Best Prospects • Specialty mining and extraction equipment/services for Alberta’s oil sands • Exploration and drilling services; refinery equipment • Pipeline construction equipment • Environmental remediation technology and services • Safety and security equipment and services Opportunities • Redwater Bitumen Refinery is a JV between Canadian Natural Resources & North West Upgrading. Bitumen Upgrader Phase 1 construction is set for 2012-2014: cost of $4 billion. • Kearl Oil Sands Project, a venture by Imperial Oil and Exxon Mobil, recently approved an 110,000 barrel per day expansion to the project. The mine is expected to start-up in 2012, with the expansion to be completed by 2015. • Joslyn Mine Project, a joint venture by Total E&P Canada and Suncor Energy Inc., was given approval in late 2011. The project will cost between $7-9 billion and is expected to yield 874 million barrels with a capacity of 100,000 bpd. The mine should be running by 2018.
