With France achieving success in world events (athletics, swimming, judo and tennis) in recent
years, interest in sport has increased. The French sports sector offers a wide range of
opportunities for UK companies especially in outdoor activities and sportswear.
In 2009, 65% of +15 year-olds practiced a sport at least once a week. Over 24 French federations
have membership in excess of 100 000.
In 2010, 21% of the French population owned at least 4 types of sports equipment (bikes, skis,
tennis rackets, etc...).
In 2009, household expenditure was €16,5billion on sports, accounting for 47% of the amount
spent nationwide (State, local authorities, private businesses etc...).
Household consumption of sports items and equipment increased 3.5% by volume in 2011
compared to 2010. This was due to a rise in the number of sports clubs, fitness centres and gyms.
Also, an increasing importance on physical appearance has helped boost interest in sports and
sales of equipment in France.
The sports manufacturing sector is dominated by 4 sectors: mountain sports (mainly skiing),
clothing and shoes, home swimming pools and hunting/fishing equipment.
ξ Outdoor sports and activities are becoming more and more popular as they are easier to
ξ Sportswear continues to be a high-growth sector. Many people wear sportswear as
everyday clothes due to current fashion trends.
ξ “Discount” ranges of branded products have become more popular due to the decrease in
purchasing power. However price is not the most important aspect. Consumers are also
sensitive to quality, performance, comfort and design.
ξ In 2007, the French government defined the following areas in which sports manufacturing
could be improved:
ξ Environmentally friendly products
ξ Wide product ranges which are good value for money and well-designed.
