Recent improvements in poultry production, including the adoption of high-quality standards should help the sector. However, the increase in input costs ?mainly feed grain, which accounts up to 70 percent of poultry production costs? severely threatened producers? margins. The Greek poultry industry is vertically integrated and dominated by a few large cooperatives that account for nearly 70 percent of production. Most broiler producers are located in Epirus, Central Greece, and Macedonia-Thrace. Consumption Greek per capita poultry consumption amounts to approximately 18.5 kg/year. Despite Greece?s economic downturn, MY 2010/2011 broiler meat demand is expected to remain stable. Poultry demand is increasing due to the perception that ?white? meat is healthier and cheaper than ?red? one, as well as the increased use of poultry meat in frozen processed products and ready meals. Trade Greece is more or less self-sufficient in broiler production. Italy and Netherlands are the main suppliers to Greece. Bulgaria and Macedonia are the major destinations for Greece exports. Most turkey production is located in Epirus, Central Greece, and Macedonia-Thrace. Consumption MY 2010/2011 Greek turkey meat consumption is expected to remain stable from the previous year. Trade Greek demand is almost completely satisfied by imports from Italy, Netherlands, and France. Greece exports small amount of turkey meat to Bulgaria.
