On November 22, 2012, The Food Safety and Standard Authority of India (FSSAI) issued a draft
notification proposing new standards relating to Olive Oil. The deadline for submitting comments is
December 21, 2012. As of December 3, 2012, it does not appear that the new proposed standards had
been notified to the World Trade Organization (WTO).
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India recently published a draft notification proposing new
standards relating to olive oil. The deadline for comments is December 21, 2012. After comments are
received and considered, the new standards will come into force on the date of its final publication in
the Official Gazette, India’s equivalent of the Federal Register. India is a small but growing importer of
olive oil; imports were valued at $4.5 million in 2011, up from $1.5 million in 2009. Small volumes of
olive oil have been exported from the United States.
