On December 03, 2012, The Food Safety and Standard Authority of India (FSSAI) issued a statutory advisory specifying use of stearic acid as lubricant in sugar-based/sugar-free confections.

The advisory states that Prevention of Food Adulteration Rule, 1955 standards will apply for such products till necessary a notification or amendment is issued under the Food Safety and Standards regulations. General Information: The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India recently published a statutory advisory specifying that FSSAI inadvertently missed the use of stearic acid as lubricant in sugar-based/sugar-free confections, lozenges, and chewing gum/bubble gum in Appendix A, table 13 of the Food Safety and Standards (Food products standards and Food Additives), Regulation, 2011. As per FSSAIā€™s order of July 24, 2012, in the event of any variance in standards for the aforementioned products between FSS regulations and earlier Prevention of Food Adulteration (PFA) Rules, 1955, the earlier PFA standards will apply. The advisory states that specific enforcement or prosecution may not be launched against the use of stearic acid in the above mentioned products within the prescribed limit till a necessary notification or amendment is issued under FSS regulations.
