Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has published a procedure for reviewing the existing standards for food products and additives.

General Information: Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has published a procedure for reviewing the existing standards for food products and additives prescribed in the Food Safety and Standards (Food Product Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011. The authority will invite comments and suggestions for the modification of existing or inclusion of new standards of food products or additives from consumers/consumer organizations, government public sector institutions/organizations, food industry, experts in food science and technology, scientific institutions, research and food analysis labs, medical practitioners, public health experts, Universities, auditing institutions or any other stakeholder for amendment of Food Safety and Standards (Food Product Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011. These comments/suggestions will be reviewed by the Standards Review Cell in Food Safety and Standards Authority of India. Procedure for review of Standards of food products and additives : All applications will be received by “Standards Review Cell,” who after initial screening will compile these applications depending on the nature, complexity and risk assessment associated with the suggestion. These suggestions will be forwarded to concerned expert group for review. Thereafter these will be placed before the respective Scientific Panel, which will either carry out the assessment itself or form a working group to look into the matter. The Scientific Panel after due assessment will forward these suggestions to the Scientific Committee. During the review process the FSSAI, if so required, can ask for additional information from the applicant, order special study, generation of data, etc. After examination and consideration, these suggestions will be placed before the Authority and then forwarded to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare for approval for draft notification. The timeline set for receiving suggestions is March 31, 2012.
