There are four major laws in Japan pertaining to food safety and standards; the Food Safety Basic Law, Food Sanitation Law, Japan Agricultural Standards Law, and Health Promotion law. The Food Safety Basic Law set the principles for developing a food safety regime and also set up the role of the Food Safety Commission, a food related risk assessment body.
