Introduction: This report summarizes an announcement published by SAGARPA in Mexico?s Diario Oficial (Federal Register) on April 2, 2012, declaring all counties of the state of Sonora, except Hermosillo, as areas free from the pecan nut casebearer (Acrobasis Nuxvorella), and all the state of Sonora as free from the Hickory Schuckworm (Cydia Caryana). Executive Summary: SAGARPA published an announcement in the Diario Oficial, on April 2, 2012, declaring all counties of the state of Sonora, except Hermosillo, as areas free from the pecan nut casebearer, and all the state of Sonora as free from the hickory schuckworm. The official regulations used for the establishment of the pest free zone is NOM-069-FITO-1995 for the establishment and recognition of pest free zones. This announcement will positively impact areas established with pecan trees (Carya illinoinensis) in Sonora. This state has been increasing area planted and there are now approximately 8,836 hectares with an average yield of 3.78 MT/ha. These pests are present in most production regions in Mexico, including the states of Chihuahua, Nuevo Leon, Durango and Coahuila. Overall, Mexican pecan acreage was estimated at nearly 90,000 hectares for MY 2010/11. Pecan tree propagative material coming from areas not considered free from the pecan nut casebearer and the hickory schuckworm and with a destination to the pecan production areas of the state of Sonora, which are free from the mentioned pests, should have a National Transportation Phytosanitary Certificate of vegetative products issued by the Verification Unit. The Certificate must have written under additional phytosanitary requirements the following text: ?the propagative material is free of the pecan nut casebearer (acrobasis nuxvorella), and the hickory schuckworm (cydia caryana)?, and also indicate the active ingredient and the dose of the treatment product that was applied.
