Notifies OIE. General Information: On November 13, 2012 Slovak Veterinary Authorities reported two outbreaks of anthrax. First case was confirmed on November 8, by the National Laboratory of the State Veterinary Institute in Zvolen. Three dead animals originated from a cattle herd of 153 on pasture in Staškovce, near Stropkov in the Presov Region. The location is approximately within 10 km from Polish border. The second case occurred shortly after, on November 10, at the same locality. One animal died on a farm, which was housing together 124 heads of cattle. Source of the outbreaks is probably former mass burial of animals in the area in the past. The Veterinary Authority reported that all proper control measures were applied; affected premises quarantined, affected animal populations treated with antibiotics. Vaccination in response to the outbreaks will be applied to animals in the region bordering the infected farms. Outbreak has been notified to the OIE.
