Shortly after the Thai Department of Livestock (DLD) strengthened requirements for audits of production systems involving livestock and uncooked meat products from exporting countries, several Thai importers reported to FAS/Bangkok that the DLD refused to grant import permits for shipment of U.S. turkey meat to Thailand. In response, Post quickly conducted discussions and successfully persuaded DLD officials to grant “grandfather” status to Thai companies that imported turkey meat from U.S. manufacturers already exporting to Thailand. The grandfather rule enables businesses to keep exporting until DLD completes its audits. The successful negotiations prevented the disruption of U.S. turkey meat exports to Thailand, valued at about $1.2 million per annum (see table below). The Thai Government plans to conduct audits of the U.S. meat production system (for U.S. turkey meat and beef) in early 2013.
