An Expert's View about Cosmetics in China

Most cosmetics counters in supermarkets are dominated by international or leading domestic brands. But "specialty" cosmetics stores have swiftly expanded and captured a 60% market share in second- and third-tier cities.

These specialty outlets have become the third largest marketing channel for cosmetics after department stores and supermarkets.

There are currently over 150,000 operators of specialty cosmetics stores across the country and their number is growing much faster than for supermarket counters.

Specialty stores for local daily products have mushroomed over the past few years, particularly in 2010.

Shenzhen-based 1,000 Colours has opened six new stores in cities like Wuhan and Dongguan and plans to open between 30 and 50 stores in Central China while giving existing stores facelifts.

Beijing-based Yesa-Mege said it planned to open 60 new stores in 2011.
