France is the third largest manufacturer of powered 2-wheel vehicles in Europe. Production in 2009 was 109,705 vehicles, about 13% of European output.
France ranks fourth in the number of motorcycles on the road in Europe at 3,532,000 in 2009 (1,748,000 million mopeds under 50cc and 1,784,000 million motorcycles over 50cc).
France also is the second largest market in Europe for new motorcycles and mopeds with 343,117 new registrations in 2010. France is particularly strong in mopeds and led Europe with 138,018 new moped registrations in 2010. France sold 185,609 motorcycles and scooters in 2010. 86,050 of these sales were vehicles less than 125cc and 99,559 were over 125cc.
France imports most of its motorcycles/scooters/mopeds from Italy and Japan at 21 and 20 percent, respectively. Other imports come mainly from other Western European countries, especially Spain and Belgium, with China being the only non-European country in the top 10 exporters to France.
Imports from the United States are a very small part of this market and account for only 1.42% of imports. However, the market share of the United States increased 50% from 2008 to 2009 and increased again 177% from 2009 to 2010.
