•Hong Kong’s electronics industry is the largest merchandise export earner, which accounted for 56% of Hong Kong’s total exports in 2010. According to latest available statistics, Hong Kong was the world’s largest exporter of telephone sets; and the world’s second largest exporter of calculators, sound recording apparatus, computer parts/accessories and video recording/reproducing apparatus (including DVD/VCD recorders/players).
•Hong Kong’s electronics exports surged by 28% in 2010. Exports of parts and components to the Chinese mainland, the largest export market of Hong Kong, expanded rapidly on the back of expansion in outward processing production. Electronics exports to the EU and the US also performed well, amid the resurgence of consumer demand for electronic products.
•Small and relatively low-cost computers with wireless connectivity, in particular the tablet computers, are gaining popularity in the market. Sales of mobile phones with advanced features like smart phones are also on the rise. On another development, the industry is working on computer devices and peripherals with interfaces of higher data transfer rate, including those in USB 3.0 specification.
