Last updated: 24 Mar 2011

Summary

Since the 1970s the Italian market for professional cleaning machinery and products, despite cyclical fluctuations, has enjoyed a nearly constant growth, in regards to both internal demand and local manufacturers’ revenues. However, as a consequence of the global economic downturn, the market suffered heavy losses in 2009 and has yet to fully recover. The market for cleaning chemicals performed better than that for machines due to increased concerns over the transmission of viruses such as H1N1. Opportunities for future market growth exist because of the increased adoption of “Green Public Procurement” practices and can be found in the hospitality and health care sectors, among others.

“Pulire”, the leading international trade exhibition for professional cleaning technologies, will take place in May 2011 in Verona and U.S. exporters are encouraged to exhibit and take advantage of the services offered by the U.S. Commercial Service before and during the show.

Market Data

Since the 1970s, the Italian market for professional cleaning machinery and products, despite cyclical fluctuations, has enjoyed a nearly constant growth, with regards to both internal demand and local manufacturers’ revenues. However, as a consequence of the global economic downturn, the market suffered heavy losses in 2009 and, in spite of minor improvements in the last months of that year, which were confirmed in the first quarter of 2010, it has yet to fully recover.

Market data in this report are taken from a poll conducted by Afidamp, the Italian cleaning manufacturers’ association, of a very significant number of Italian manufacturers and importers of professional cleaning machinery, equipment, chemical products, fibers and cloths and related products. The companies polled make up over 85% of the Italian “cleaning sector” and are concentrated in the northern regions (similar to the U.S. States) of Lombardy, Veneto and Emilia Romagna, within a short radius of the town of Verona. Verona will also host the leading European trade show for the sector in 2011, Pulire.
