An Expert's View about Human Health Services in Italy

After a late entrance into the global life science sector, Italian biotech now stands on par with leading European countries. Despite the international economic downturn, Italian biotech continues to grow, thanks to its world-class research centers, a regulatory framework that is aligning itself with the EU and a growing capacity to open channels between academia, the pharmaceutical industry and regional and national government. Turnover for 2009 was $7.6 billion, with Lombardy dominating over all other regions, representing 65% of the total. Areas of opportunity for U.S. companies are oncology, immunology, infective diseases and cardiovascular applications. Exports of products for research centers and healthcare facilities are also promising prospects, with particular demand for human diagnostics and instrumentation.
