Overview About International Trade in Laos

Economic Overview

Laos has had high and constant growth for several years now, a trend which is expected to continue for the coming years. Except during the Asian crisis of 1997, the country showed an average growth of 6% per year, from 1988 to 2008. GDP growth which was estimated at 7.7% in 2010 should remain at this level also in 2011.Growth is sustained by a very dynamic foreign trade and supported by FDI in-flow from the operation of significant infrastructure projects and the mining of the natural hydraulic and mineral wealth.

The country remains heavily dependent on foreign aid, which sustains investments. The main obstacles to the country's economic development are the lack of skilled labor, inadequate infrastructures and a high level of corruption. The seventh plan of socio-economic development for 2011-15 emphasizes the implementation of the UN Millenium Developmental Goals.

In Laos, a country which is amongst the least developed countries (LDC), more than 30% of the population lives under the poverty threshold. The level of education is low and the life conditions in rural areas tenuous.
