Economic Overview

In 2009, the economic growth of the country declined compared to 2008, due to the decrease in production of the mining industry, which is one of the country's key developmental components (especially uranium extraction). Growth has nevertheless strengthened again, from -1.2% in 2009 to 3.5% in 2010, despite the shocks suffered by the economy (drying up of external financing due to the political crisis, food insecurity and floods) and should further accelerate in 2011.

Being geographically landlocked and corruption are hindrances to the country's growth. As a part of economic reforms, Niger has initiated a privatization process and has adopted a Poverty Reduction Strategy Program which aims at improving health, primary education, rural infrastructures, and judicial reform.The government is also planning to implement structural reforms aimed at improving debt management and the monitoring and quality of budget implementation. Uranium mining, oil drilling and the mining of gold, coal and other mineral resources are expected to boost the economy.
