Overview About International Trade in the Palestinian Territories

Economic Overview

The territories under the administration of the Palestinian Authority have endured the effects of the unfavorable international economic situation and, most of all, the Israeli blockage. The Gaza Strip, due to the traffic restrictions and problems with its liquid assets, plunged into the crisis with a negative growth rate of -2% while the West Bank benefits from a relatively dynamic growth (7%). However, both areas largely depend on international aid.

Together with Palestine's alarming humanitarian situation and political instability, the government must face many other challenges: budget deficit, tax crisis, underinvestment. Structural reform as well as an end to the Israeli blockage are both required in order to assume a long-term dynamic growth.

70% of Palestinians live below the poverty line and more than one in four is unemployed. Infrastructures (schools, power plants, hospitals and water installations) have suffered considerable damages and access to care is limited due to the lack of hospital equippment.
