Economic Overview

The economy of Somalia is particularly dilapidated due to the image of its political situation.  The development of the domestic private sector contributes, to some extent, to the economy's growth.  However, the absence of a State, the continuous conflict situation, the permanent civil disturbances and the rivalry between various clans paralyze the economy which has become even more informal.  Somalia records a very weak growth, evaluated at 2.6%, which was contracted due to the global economy slowdown.  The country remains extremely dependent on international aid, and the future perspectives are even more alarming.

 

 

Somalia is one of the poorest countries in the world and the humanitarian situation in the south is catastrophic.  Health indicators are also amongst the least developed in Africa.  Life expectancy, infant mortality and maternal death are at alarming levels, inequalities are high and illiteracy affects one Somalian out of two.
