The line has dominated online buyer inquiries for close to one year. Interest spiked
in early-2012, spurred by the launch of the new iPad.
Tablet PCs have held the top spot among consumer electronics, computer, security
and telecom products on the Global Sources website for the past 10 months.
Inquiries for 1H 2012 have soared more than 130 percent YoY. Searches hit their
highest for the first time in March, right around the release of the new iPad.
Tablet PCs first broke into Global Sources' top 10 electronics products in August
2010. Buyer inquiries then jumped more than 120 percent from the month before,
boosting the category to ninth spot after ranking 27th in July. It has been an
upward journey since then.
On the supply side, China makers continue to widen their selections to ride on the
worldwide popularity of tablet PCs. In June, the category led supplier product
postings among all consumer electronic, computer, security and telecom devices on
the Global Sources website.
In the months ahead, suppliers will launch more tablet PCs with LED-backlit panels
to match the "green" trend. At present, models with such displays represent less
than 15 percent of production. By 2015, the share is expected to surpass 60
percent.
